Re: “The Putt-Putt on Perkins

In reference to peterwertz' comments about Al's Golfhaven on Perkins, there most definitely was an accident involving the slide. As I recall it was named the SuiSlide, or maybe that was just the nickname we gave it. Anyway, one summer evening, my mom and two of her sisters brought us kids there for an evening of miniature golf and fun. Mom knew Al Fister; his kids attended the same school we did (Sherwood Elementary).

My mom was over-cautious and kept putting off letting me ride the slide by myself. One of the uncles was pressed into service to ride with each of us sitting on the burlap sack. Mom finally agreed to let me ride by myself, but she cautioned me to avoid a certain lane. She noticed that as sliders hit a certain spot, they were getting dumped from the burlap sacks. No one appeared to get hurt and apparently no one complained to Mr. Fister.

After promising to avoid that lane, I grabbed a burlap sack and climbed the stairs to the top. Of course I made a beeline for the damaged lane. I was probably the lightest person to ride that lane that night and when I hit the magic spot, I was suddenly tossed into the air and flipped over on my tummy where I finished the ride to the bottom head first trying to figure out exactly what just happened. I suffered minor friction burns on my arms but was otherwise just fine. Mom had a come apart and I felt sorry for Mr. Fister as she read him the riot act about how her precious angel could have been killed. Then of course she lit into "precious angel" for "deliberately defying" her. That was a most fun night!
