Arlo Guthrie

When: Sat., March 20, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $35
The first family of folk music lands in Memphis for a stop on the “Guthrie Family Rides Again” tour, with three generations representing the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Woody Guthrie. Current family patriarch Arlo celebrated the 40th anniversary of Woodstock last year with the release of Arlo Guthrie: Tales of ’69, a recently discovered lost recording from the Summer of Love. But Arlo’s daughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie, gets credit for taking the lead with the new Go Waggaloo, a “family album” that features her husband Johnny Irion, their two daughters, Arlo, and other family members and friends (including old Woody compatriot Pete Seeger). A collection of kids’ songs, Go Waggaloo is part original (“Don’t I Fit in My Daddy’s Shoes?,” “’Cuz We’re Cousins”), part traditional (“She’ll Be Comin’ ’Round the Mountain”), and part unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics set to new music. Among this last group is a terrific title song that’s a major work on a par with anything found on the previous Billy Bragg & Wilco Mermaid Avenue collections of “new” Woody Guthrie songs. The Guthrie Family performs at the Bartlett Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 20th. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $35. — Chris Herrington
