Asylum Street Spankers and The Yazoo Shakes

When: Fri., May 8, 9 p.m. 2009
Austin roots band the Asylum Street Spankers has become something of an institution over their decade-plus existence. Though something like 40 musicians have spent time in the band over the years, the Spankers have always revolved around two things — co-leaders Christina Marrs and Wammo and the union of "old-timey" acoustic-based sound with a modern, progressive worldview. Marrs — home with a new baby — is not making this tour, but that shouldn't alter this band's fundamental sound and spirit. The band's latest album, What? And Give up Show Biz? is a double-disc live album that draws from a two-week residency at New York's Barrow Street Theatre. It's also a product of the Memphis-connected Yellow Dog Records label. Locals the Yazoo Shakes open.
