At Sunset

The end is near. On Saturday, Memphis In May wraps up its 2006 season with its annual SunTrust Sunset Symphony. Headliner for the event is Mavis Staples, the legendary soul singer and member of the Staple Singers. It was her forceful vocals on the group's 1972 number-one hit "I'll Take You There" that made the song a stirring anthem for societal hope and frustration. MIM is offering VIP seating for the concert: $400 per table, with proceeds benefiting the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Memphis In May.

Preceding the Sunset Symphony at 3 p.m. will be Praise in the Park, a gospel concert featuring Perfection and Darrel Petties & Strength In Praise. Gates open at 2 p.m. Picnics are welcome, though there will be food vendors onsite.

Memphis in May SunTrust Sunset Symphony, 2-9 p.m. Saturday, May 27th. at Tom Lee Park. $7. Rain date is Sunday, May 28th.
