Btw, thanks to the writer, it's a great piece, & to those who get it.

Re: “Culture, Not Costumes

*cartoonish, with an h. I am absolutely not blaming cartoonists! Autocorrect apparently never saw "The Bad News Bears," & does tend to assume sometimes. Mea culpa, I failed to catch it in time.

Re: “Culture, Not Costumes

Savage 3, Bigger & more important issues than murder? Hello, it's life or death. I realize the connection isn't immediately obvious. Did ya miss the part explaining in detail HOW this GETS WOMEN KILLED? Costumes are racism, like redface or blackface, but perv fodder, which attracts the sicker more twisted psychos, the type that "need" her to see her death coming & fear it so they can get off. Pardon my bluntness, but otherwise people don't seem to get the seriousness of it. Stereotypes, especially sexualized ones, & marginalization lead to physical bullying of Native kids, & rape & murder of Native women & girls even thousands of miles away (#MMIWG #MMIW) bc just like with mascots for teams in national sports leagues, perps see mainstream indifference & mockery as permission, so it increases. The rate is far higher than for any other ethnicity, though the Native population is smaller. It gets white girls in these costumes raped on campuses, too. People treat Natives like they're all welfare cases, extinct, or exotic but not real living people, or like the ones living now are primitive & unintelligent, incapable of doing a great job, bc of the cartoonist portrayals. Would YOU think that way based on a costume, headdress or mascot? No. It's your taxes you think they affect. They don't. There's a trust. The capital is never touched. Just the interest. Per cap comes from casinos. By far, most Natives work, tho there are a few remote Rez locations where no corporate bigwigs feel like building a source of employment. The lands are needed for spiritual reasons (see the Amendments, please) & people have the right to own lands & protect them. But I digress. This isn't all about you & your wallet. The bullying leads to childhood & teen SUICIDE at very, very high rates compared to other groups. There's so much historical ammo ready. Should it? No. But kids can be sadistic & the ammo provides means. Assimilation makes it worse, so we have some situations to solve as a nation. You needn't help. The rest of us will. Just please QUIT saying there are MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES THAN WOMEN'S SURVIVAL. I realize we can't all be born men. But no one would be born without us & on behalf of your mother, you're welcome, & ffs go sit down, you're grounded, young man. (Mutters under her breath, mom-like, something about zero empathy being sociopathic.) It's not about being offended. It's not a frivolous concern by bored disgruntled layabouts with nothing to do but collect food stamps. Professional salaried women are missing. Suburban girls. Teachers on the rez. 5 year olds, 25 year olds, grandmothers!!! Tens of thousands of unsolved, or uninvestigated cases. Bc white men dgaf. (Why, I ask,IS that? Hm? Just the S word, expendable? Not your daughter? Nice.) It's about very real consequences, terror, grief, and humanity, & decency. You should pay attention & get some of those last two. They're nice. Plus, it's kind of required for being a respectable person, which helps in business, if it really is all about your wallet. And you kind of sound like it is, in place of a spirit/soul. Those are nice too.... Maybe Wal-Mart will start stocking them. There seems to be a deficit of those, in use right now. ("Things they teach in kindergarten...." & she walked off, mom-muttering again, shaking her head....)
