Re: “A Father’s Five Minutes

Such a great post. I grew up on Cardinal baseball with my Daddy as well. We watched on TV every Sunday afternoon and took yearly trips to St. Louis. He taught me the infield fly rule and how to keep the scorecard and stood next to me while I watched Bob Gibson warm up from 10 feet away. We would get to the ballpark 2 hours early just to watching batting practice.

Once I got hit in the head by a foul ball during batting practice and, later, in the second inning, I caught a foul ball. I still have that ball in my bookcase, though the "National League" printing is wearing off. Daddy never caught a foul ball in his life and I think he was always a little bit jealous.

After Daddy passed away in 1993, I didn't follow the Cards much - every time I'd try to watch a game, it reminded me that he wasn't there to watch with me, to commiserate about how many baserunners we stranded or bemoan crappy pitching. In the past couple of years, I've started watching again and, though I can still sometimes hear Daddy's voice, the memories are more happy than sad.

Keep sharing that with your girls - I'm the 51-year-old girl whose Daddy did what you're doing now. I'm so glad he did.

Re: “Memphis' Tent for the Homeless

I'm relieved to see Memphis reach out to our homeless population. It's too easy to turn up the heat in our own warm homes and forget. Kudos to these folks for caring and putting feet to good intentions.
