Well said. Fiscal responsibility isn't always a "sexy" topic, and it's more fun to talk about amusement parks, professional sports teams, walking trails, etc., but the reality is that businesses make their decisions while looking at the (financial) bottom line - if Memphis can't compete economically, then businesses don't care about Beale Street's charm. Residents have traditionally given more weight to "quality of life" factors, but in this economic downturn, they are focused on where they can *afford* to live not where they'd like to live - or at least they are asking themselves, "Am I getting my money's worth?" The fact that many residents are leaving the city for greener pastures tells us how they are answering that question.
