Longtime Flyer readers are most certainly familiar with artist Jeanne Seagle's work. Her illustrations for "News of Weird" have graced the pages of the Flyer for more than two decades. On Friday at the Buckman Arts Center's Levy Gallery, there will be an opening reception for "In Love with Color," a joint exhibition featuring glass sculptures by Lisa Allen and paintings by Seagle.

Seagle says her paintings are inspired by the Mississippi Delta, particularly from the vantage point of Davis Lake, where her husband had a fishing camp. "It's beautiful and ever-changing," she says.

The paintings on display include a large, seven-piece mural as well as several landscapes and portraits.

"Some of the works came from sketches on-site [at Davis Lake] — pieces that I do over and over," Seagle says. "The people ... I have no idea. They may start out as a man and end up a woman. I have no control. They just emerge."

Seagle says her paintings share traits with her "News of the Weird" illustrations: "They're kind of funky-looking and stylized, twisted a little."

As for "News of the Weird," for which Seagle has done more than 1,000 illustrations, she says that, yes, the items are still weird to her. "It's always new," she says. "It's incredible and inexhaustible."

"In Love with Color: Sculptural Glass by Lisa Allen and Paintings by Jeanne Seagle" at the Buckman Arts Center's Levy Gallery. Opening reception: Friday, August 13th, 5:30 p.m. The show runs through September 10th.
