Company D Encore Performance

When: Thu., Jan. 7, 6:30 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

Company d, a local dance troupe for young adults with Down syndrome, traces its origins to a performance for a reunion event for Special Kids. “And one step at a time,” says Darlene Winters, the company’s artistic director and choreographer, “we decided to keep on dancing.”

There are classes during the week for the participants, ranging in age from 13 to 30, and a summer workshop with master classes that have been led in the past by members of Ballet Memphis and Project: Motion.

While Company d has over the years performed at a number of invitation-only events, such as the Variety Club’s annual Wild Game Dinner, they will hold their first very own performance with a show called Encore this Thursday at the Hutchison School.

According to Winters, Encore will include “everything from day one” as well as new pieces. The show will be an eclectic mix of modern, ballet, and jazz with music ranging from “Canon in D” to Elvis.

“I love it,” Winters says of working with Company d. “I wake up on dance days, and I go, ‘Yes!’” — Susan Ellis
