Dinosaur Jr. with Dead Confederate

When: 2009
Price: $20
Before Nirvana, there was Dinosaur Jr. A sort of missing link between 80's post-punk and 90's grunge, the Massachusetts-born trio emerged in the mid-80's as a vehicle for bandleader J. Mascis' drawling vocals and expressive, feedback-drenched guitar. At the peak- I'd vote 1987's You're Living All Over Me- they sounded something like electric Neil Young relocated to basement hardcore parties. The sloppy, hesitant way the band changes tempos early in You're Living All Over Me's "The Lung" is still one of that decade's most endearing musical moments.

Mascis reunited the original trio- Sebadoh's Lou Barlow on bass and a drummer who answers to "Murph- a few years ago, and Dino Jr. were as interesting and deafeningly loud as ever at the Young Avenue Deli on the first "comeback" tour. They'll be back in town in bigger digs this week when they play Minglewood Hall Tuesday, April 14th, with Dead Confederate. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $20.
