Drama Is Served

The NairobiCafe Dinner Theatre promises a triple pleasure: an award-winning play, live music, and, of course, yummy din-din. The traveling show will premiere in Memphis at Fire and Ice on Saturday, December 2nd, at 7 p.m., followed by a matinee on Sunday, December 3rd, at 3 p.m.

The play, Waitin' 2 End Hell, puts your comedy in my drama, my drama in your comedy. The story focuses on a married couple who get the 12-year itch and how their struggles affect their family and friends. Dante Jones is a middle-aged father caught between the gender-role traditions of his father and contemporary women's-lib realities. He's married to Diane, a high-powered ad-agency exec who is having her own issues with what is expected of her. (And that fine co-worker Mark sure is looking hot enough to hop on.) Waitin' 2 End Hell is in the tradition of African-American relationship-coming-of-age stories such as Waiting to Exhale, natch, the books of Memphian Eric Jerome Dickey, and the locally produced indie film What Goes Around. Penned by William A. Parker, the off-Broadway production Waitin' 2 End Hell won commercial and critical success and was nominated for four AUDELCO awards.

The show is produced by and stars NairobiCafe director Kenneth Dozier (pictured) and will feature smooth jazz from national recording artist Joe Johnson, a three-course meal, and a "soul classic after-party."

NairobiCafe Dinner Theatre presents "Waitin' 2 End Hell"; Fire and Ice, 6430 Winchester; Saturday, December 2nd, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 3rd, at 3 p.m.; Tickets $35/advance, $45 at the door; Call 282-3202 or go to MySpace.com/NairobiCafe
