Fly on the Wall

Map Quest

WPTY ABC 24 news has become obsessed cartography. That's right, the Eyewitness News team is using its handy-dandy street map, a tool once exclusively reserved for drive-time traffic reports, to illustrate every kind of story. If you want to avoid those spots on the map where Criminal Court judge Fred Axley allegedly committed various acts of sexual harassment, WPTY is here to help.

The news station has also been using their map to illustrate its regular feature "What's Making You Sick," a rundown of the week's most popular ailments. So if you want to know where all the diarrhea traps are located on the 240 loop, tune in.

Back in Time

Could it be that Memphis has entered a time warp and we're all actually living in 1952, that golden age when "girls were girls" and "men were men"? On Friday, May 11th, a teaser appeared on The Commercial Appeal's front page that said, "Dads infiltrate PTA: What's next? A room father baking cupcakes?" What's next? Ladies entering the work force?

Dave Brown's Body

Are weathermen goofy by nature, or is there a clause built into the contract of all weathermen saying that the network reserves the right to paint you up like a clown? Between Willard Scott's compulsion to dress like Carmen Miranda and Al Roker's televised gastric-bypass surgery, it would seem that all's fair in love and meteorology. WMC-TV 5, celebrating 30 years of having "Doppler" Dave Brown at the weather map, has converted Brown's likeness into a submissive digital bobblehead that can be accessed online at go.wmctv.com/dave.html.

Digital Dave's giant head bobbles and occasionally springs from his neck with a mighty "boing!" You can make Dave say wacky things, such as "Rain is in the forecast" and "Back to our regularly scheduled program." It's not quite as creepy as seeing Al Roker's small intestine up close and personal, but it's close.
