Fly on the Wall

Turner Classics

It's a well-known fact that Ike Turner was a drug-addled, Tina-slapping prick on a stick. Still, you'd think obituaries for one of the 20th century's most influential musicians might accentuate the positive aspects of the man's life and career, wouldn't you? Apparently not, as obit writers from around the globe have spilled as much ink on Ike's bad behavior as they have on his hellaciously fine oeuvre. At least ChartAttack, an online music news website based in Canada, had a sense of humor about the former Sun recording artist. ChartAttack's headline: "Ike Turner Couldn't Beat The Grim Reaper." Not to be outdone, the always classy New York Post slugged its story "Ike 'Beats' Tina to Death."

Southern Town

Memphis has gone charter-school crazy! Last week, the Memphis School Board gave the go-ahead to convert KIPP Diamond Academy into a charter school. Power Center Academy begins classes next fall, as does Memphis Business Academy. An application to open a charter school called Dream Academy was rejected, however, presumably because nobody in their right mind wants children attending a school named for an English one-hit-wonder band from the 1980s.

The Fly Team has been making fun of Memphis' TV news stations lately for spreading wild urban myths about lesbian gangs and candy-flavored meth. This week, when an e-mail about gang initiations made the rounds, at least two local news stations reported that the e-mails were a hoax. Kudos to WHBQ Fox 13 for getting it right and semi-kudos to ABC 24, which got it right but was still unable to resist the urge to engage in a little fear mongering. Reporter Dana Rebik quoted Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Steve Shular saying that "it would not be out of the question for a potential gang member to be ordered to shoot someone." So, for God's sake, be scared, people!
