Fly on the Wall

Headline of the Week

Via the Los Angeles Times: "Stop Shoving Elvis Down Seniors' Throats." According to an editorial in the Times, "Many see the king as an assault on their era, not the embodiment." The article also describes in graphic detail a set of gruesome photos from a nursing home birthday party gone terribly wrong: "The six seniors subjected to the song styling of the Elvis impersonator looked bored, indifferent, or alarmed. The only person who seemed to be enjoying himself was the clown in the Elvis wig." Talk about abuse.

This past week, Commercial Appeal sportswriter Ronald Tillery described the ticket renewal efforts conducted by the Memphis Grizzlies as a "True Loyalty" campaign. According to Tillery, a campaign to keep 80 percent of current ticket holders means "access, additional perks, and a choice of extraordinary gifts," and all at a low, low price. Sounds a little more like true bribery, no?

Headline of the Week 2

From the AP: "Elvis Shows Up at Kentucky Court Drunk." Naturally, it wasn't the dearly departed King of Rock-and-Roll but an Elvis impersonator who showed up in court wearing sunglasses, a scarf, and a rhinestone-studded shirt.

Shortly after the Lester Street killings, Memphis radio host Bobby O'Jay discouraged his listeners from calling in tips to the police. According to various reports, O'Jay warned, "People will hit you in the mouth for telling the smallest of things ... and nine times out of 10, people will be wondering where did that money come from? You can't just say, 'I won it at the casino.'" Ignoring the host's defeatist attitude regarding crime, why can't you say you won money at the casino? Isn't that what the lottery's for?
