Fly on the Wall

Mess Code

Usually when you see the headline "Bar Examines Dress Code," it tops a story about some hoity-toity nightclub exploring new ways to keep out the riffraff. But that's not the case with a recent Daily News article by reporter Bill Dries. That story documented a recent meeting of attorneys and judges to talk about whether or not a dress code should be enforced within in the nine divisions of Circuit Court.

The discussion included whether or not cocktail shoes were disrespectful to the court and "how much arm is too much for a woman to show," according to Dries. Mitch Kowalski, a reporter with Canada's National Post, picked on the story, noting that the Memphis legal eagles were focusing on a "serious issue confronting all of us as summer arrives: toe cleavage."

While on the topic of The Daily News, in last week's Memphis Flyer, your Pesky Fly referred to The Daily News' new newsweekly as The Weekly News. It is actually called The Memphis News and hits the streets this week.

Mane Man

The Fly Team enjoys nothing more than a brilliantly named business. This week, we're proud to introduce the Hair Loom on Cleveland.

As salon names go, it's not quite as good as Curl Up & Die. But it does sound like a great place to get a weave.

Kinkos & Kings

When Kinko's founder Paul Orfalea discovered that FedEx was renaming Kinko's stores "FedEx Office," he responded with a strained Elvis analogy. Comparing Elvis to Kinko's copy centers, Orfalea told the Los Angeles Times: "Presley entered the army ... as a rock-and-roller but returned as a crooner and movie star. The rebellious independence [John] Lennon loved in Elvis was gone long before the King died."

So Kinko's is soulless now?
