Violent Violence

On Monday, February 2nd, at 8 a.m., Memphis law enforcement officers were dispatched to investigate a commotion near the 3000 block of Ford Road in Southwest Memphis. The police knew the house because, according to My Eyewitness News contributor Shane Myers, they had been there a week earlier when a man who had been drinking with friends fell off the porch. This time around, things were much, much worse: Another man who also had been drinking with friends pulled out a gun and shot himself in the foot. At this point, it is not known whether or not the man had an altercation with his foot prior to the shooting, which, at this time, is not believed to be gang-related.

Economic Bellwether

In a sweet, if somewhat tone-deaf attempt, to ensure readers that The Commercial Appeal will cover the arts no matter how bad the economy gets, editor Chris Peck penned a column listing all the cool things he'd been doing lately. For example, he'd attended a Bobby Rush concert at the Center for Southern Folklore and was extremely impressed by Opera Memphis' production of Treemonisha.

"Opera in a time of recession?" Peck asked rhetorically, seemingly aware that some of his readers might be unimpressed. "Yeah, it did wonders for the mind ... Remember all of this when you are sitting home alone with your 401(k) envelope ... There is more to life than bad news about the economy."

"No, the arts aren't free," Peck continued, noting that a walk through the Brooks Museum costs only $7 or "the cost of two grande mochas."

Of course, on the same day Peck's column ran, The Memphis Business Journal announced that Starbucks, the giant coffee chain that gave us the expression "grande mocha," is closing nine stores in the Memphis area.
