Fly on the Wall

Is It News?

Big ups to The Commercial Appeal for a story hipping its readers to the often overlooked fact that "Preventing dog bites starts with awareness." Obviously, all prevention starts with awareness, but even the clichéd headline might be forgivable if it topped a genuine news article about preventing man bites in dogs. And speaking of the CA ...

Red All Over

Ups to Chris Peck whose column about how Memphis needs "a string theory" seemed like the most embarrassing column anyone was ever likely to write. But like an Olympic athlete, the CA editor outdid himself with an even more bizarre column that could have been penned in 1953 and titled "I Sat by a Black Man."

In case you missed it, here's a condensed version: Peck, a white man, sat by Humphrey Moore Jr., a black man, one night during barbecue fest. That was unusual because the "cloth that swaddled Humphrey Moore Jr. was cut in an all-African-American neighborhood."

That meant he'd probably never traveled to Wyoming, where Peck was born. In spite of being differently swaddled, Moore saved Peck's seat when the pale, Western news guy went for a plate of catfish. "Then I saved his place when he needed to hit the head," the editor wrote. The two men spent the evening "jawing away. No talking politics or race or anything big in particular."

It was a touching story about how one white man met one black man and observed the guy like he was a being from another planet.

Memphis Voodoo
