Fly on the Wall

Bye, Elvis Fans

Another Death Week celebration has come and gone and, as usual, during the festivities Elvis was everywhere. Even at

Walgreens.

Lost in Translation

Here's what TV.com writer Marc Eastman said about the cable cop show Memphis Beat: "Few shows that have aimed at a locale enough to include it in the title have come close to capturing a city's feel the way Memphis Beat has, and that would be true whether you ever saw anything that looked like Memphis or not. The visual style, the music, the characters, and so much more, simply drip of Memphis — though I reserve the right to be refuted by Memphis residents. Knowing nothing at all about the show, you could watch Dwight Hendricks (Jason Lee) walk to his car, get in, and drive away, and you'd know he had done it in Memphis."

Here's what we think he meant: Although I know virtually nothing about Memphis beyond a few cliché notions about music and barbecue, I'm perfectly willing to believe that Memphians talk like their dialogue was written by a 12-year-old.

WHALUM!!!

"Before I can approve this contract [with the daily newspaper], I need to know MCS is not paying The Commercial Appeal to disparage sitting commissioners who exercise their constitutional right to free speech," said Memphis City Schools board member Kenneth Whalum Jr., who has recently been criticized by CA columnist Wendi Thomas. Ah, the old "blacklist reporters exercising their constitutional right to criticize elected egomaniacs" trick. Very clever, Rev. Whalum. Very clever, indeed.
