Excerpted from The Commercial Appeal’s front-page story “Credit rating of Memphis consumers is worst in nation”: “‘I see a lot of mismanagement and debt ratios that are very high because of the economy,’ said Betty Jones King, executive director of the nonprofit 2nd Chance Budget and Debt Family Counseling Services. ‘People losing homes, jobs, illnesses. The foreclosure rate is causing a lot of it.’” Well, at least the foreclosure crisis is healing the sick. That’s comforting. I guess.

Verbatim II

Cassanda Tucker, mother of the saggypants shooting victim — capped in the buttocks because of his low-riding pants, we’re told — told Channel 5 reporter Jason Miles her side of the story: “My kid does not sag.”

Verbatim III

Excerpted from “Merger boils down to 3 things,” by CA editor Chris Peck: “Trust. The whole consolidation debate really spins on this. … Many people, probably most people living in the Memphis suburbs, have no confidence, no trust, in the idea that a single government that includes the city of Memphis will work for them. It’s the legacy of former mayor Willie Herenton. It’s the result of too many examples of a culture of corruption, cops on the take, waste, fraud and abuse in city agencies, and bloated governmental payrolls.” That sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Well, except for the part where Peck awkwardly blames the black guy for white flight. Anyway, here’s a picture of former Mayor Herenton, shaking hands with supporters shortly after he invented corruption. Wow, just looking at that guy who isn’t mayor anymore makes me want to build a walled community an hour’s commute from where I work. Woogah.
