Fly on The Wall

Best of 2011
In a clever twist on the ubiquitous year-end "best of " list, The Atlantic blogger Emily Badger compiled her favorite winners from the annual "best of" issues published by alternative newsweeklies around the country. But Badger went back in time for the Memphis Flyer winner. She highlighted Spindini for "Best Cougar Bar," a category we retired in 2011. In 2010's issue, Spindini was described as "the kind of place you don't frequent unless you've got some cash to plop down, making it even more conducive to attracting young professional men."

Birthday Elvis
January 8th is Elvis Presley's 77th birthday, which is as good an excuse as any to leave holiday decorations up for at least one more week. It's also a good excuse to look back at the week in Elvis. • The best Elvis-related headline this week comes from Down Under: "Australian Crocodile Elvis Steals Lawnmower." Unsurprisingly, it's about a cranky, lawnmower-hating crocodile named Elvis, who lives at an Australian wildlife park. When the lawnmower was used near Elvis' own personal jungle room, the croc responded by lunging at the mower, pulling it into five meters of water, and guarding it vigilantly. • Talk about a change of habit: Before she was a cloistered nun at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, Delores Hart was the Hollywood starlet who smooched with Elvis in the movie King Creole. The 73-year-old Hart, who became cloistered at the age of 24, recently discussed her Elvis connections in a story about her initiative to raise $4 million for abbey renovations.

• Weird Elvis: The New York Court of Appeals denied a disability claim filed by New York fireman Robert Walsh, who was injured after what has been described as "a beer-fueled fight over Elvis Presley's birthday" that ended when another firefighter broke a chair on Walsh's back.
