Fly on The Wall

Southern Culture

Last March, Fly on the Wall bid a fond and tearful farewell to one of our favorite billboards, a double-sided sign at Union and Walnut Grove that seemed to be an accidental advertisement for shotgun weddings. We are happy to report that this fine Southern tradition is being represented once again on Central just east of Cooper. Welcome back, accidental advertisement for shotgun weddings. We missed you so much.

Illegal Alien

It's as predictable as birds flying south: Winter arrives in Memphis and the Mid-South's most famous space alien, Robert "Prince Mongo" Hodges, transports himself to a vacation home in Florida to torture residents of Volusia County, who are even more horrified than his neighbors in East Memphis by his taste in home decor. While he was in Memphis, Mongo's yard art, featuring artificial sand dunes, clotheslines hung with women's underwear, and statues of alligators and frogs, was removed by Volusia County. "I'm very upset that they took my stuff," he told the Daytona News-Journal, which reported his plans to sue the county over the seizure of his property.

Verbatim

Reverend Al Green's comments to TMZ.com after President Obama sang a snippet of Green's 1972 hit "Let's Stay Together" last week: "He nailed it. ... I was thrilled that the president even mentioned my name, and if the president can get the economy going again and get everything going that he wants to, then we'll all be together."
