Free Fun

ShoWagon, the professional education-oriented theater company attached to Theatre Memphis, is creating opportunities to show off their original work and to provide Memphis families with some affordable entertainment at a time when everybody seems to be watching their spending. ShoWagon's Kids Cabarets are free. That's quite a value considering the excellent work ShoWagon has done in the past adapting classics such as Rudyard Kipling's Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.

The company performed Beauty and the Beast on March 11th. "We went back to the 400-year-old French version of the story by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont," Marques Brown, Theatre Memphis' director of education, says of the classic, frequently adapted fairy tale. "Using a minimalistic set, we [created] a narrative version of the story with enough adaptations to make it appropriate for young audiences today."

On Wednesday, March 18th, ShoWagon will perform their adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella The Little Prince.

The Little Prince is a meditation on the meaning of love that uses elements of fantasy and science fiction to show mankind at its best and its most foolish. The story is told through the eyes of a child who takes great care of the asteroid he lives on and travels to other points in space, including Earth.

"ShoWagon focuses on the themes of a child's journey of discovery, friendship, and self-awareness," Brown says.

ShoWagon's Kids Cabaret: "The Little Prince," March 18th, at 7 p.m. at Theatre Memphis. For additional information,
