Re: “In Brief Homecoming, Ford Gets Some Help from His Friends

Free Speech? The “subplot” at the Clinton / Ford Jr. rally last week, as reported by Jackson Baker in his column, is difficult to conceive. Mr. Baker reports that “…members of the Ford organization working the event attempting to minimize media attention to Cohen, even to the point of heading off photographers who tried to get snapshots of him.” Could a viable candidate for high office and his novice brother, candidate Jake Ford, actually succumb to such disreputable, unsophisticated, low brow, anti-American tactics? Could they have the nerve to preach American values while stifling media access and the public’s right to know, see, or hear, any and all aspects of a political story. If true, shouldn’t this episode send a shocking chill up our collective, free speech-loving, American spine? Hard to imagine? Read on. Today’s very impromptu rally by the Ford Jr. camp at Poplar Plaza, was oddly scheduled for the same time (4 pm) and day (Sat., Nov. 4) as Senator Cohen’s rally, planned two weeks earlier. Apparently the Ford camp decided to deflect media attention from Cohen’s event, in an amateurish attempt to support Jake Ford’s candidacy for the 9th District Congressional seat. Brings to mind the upstaging Ford Jr. demonstrated when he ambushed Corker at the airport a few weeks ago. The kicker is, this Democrat visited both rallies, first Senator Cohen’s event, and then the Ford Jr. event. Sporting a Cohen for Congress sign at the Ford Jr. event flushed the two Ford brothers (Ike and Jake) out of the crowd immediately. Suddenly my friend and I were surrounded by a throng consisting of Jake, Ike, and several other ‘brothers,’ We were threatened outright to get the Cohen signs out of sight, in order to avoid an “incident.” It was, they said, decided that there would be no “JAKE” signs at Jr.’s rally, and therefore, there would be no “COHEN” signs as well. When I suggested that the sign and free speech were my rights, the repeated reply was “no Jake signs at the rally, so no Cohen signs.” Ike, who was in my face at this point, menacingly glared at me, while striking a supposedly intimidating posture with his hand inside his upper jacket pocket, as if ready to unleash some other, more convincing method to get me in line. Jake looked on in a dour, angry way. A more diplomatic JR. supporter took us aside and tried to tamp down our outrage at this disregard for our right to free speech. “Avoid an incident,” was repeated over and over by this more articulate JR. supporter who confided that he too will vote for Cohen and his regrets that Jake was running against Cohen. I’ve often thought politics couldn’t get much lower than it already is, what with all the partisan bickering and bought and sold career politicians. Today in Memphis, at the corner of Poplar and Highland, JR.’s ambush-style rally, designed to upstage Cohen’s event, along with the FORD family’s disregard for our cherished American values of free speech, proved me wrong. Ford and his clan’s tactics of thuggish intimidation make partisan bickering look relatively wholesome in comparison. It is no longer difficult to conceive of Mr. Baker’s report of the FORD clan’s conduct at the Clinton / Ford Jr. rally last week. Perhaps the FORD “clan” should spell ‘clan’ with a “K” for their repeated acts of intimidation, ambush, and use of threats, both direct and indirect. Their tactics are more and more resembling the same disregard for American values that the other notorious Klan is known for. I am a first hand witness who will, as of this day, NOT vote for JR, Today’s events revealed the true character, or lack of, that permeates the “consciousness” of the Ford Klan. This former JR. supporter will instead reluctantly vote for Corker-- the lesser of the two evils.
