Funny Business

You remember Andy Fleming as the adorable kid in the Fleming Fine Furniture commercials. Well, Fleming's all grown now and has gotten himself mixed up in some funny business.

About a year ago, Fleming banded with fellow comedy nerds to form Mostly Comedy. They started by posting weekly podcasts on their website, mostlycomedy.com, and, in recent months, have been hosting monthly comedy shows. The shows are a mix of sketches, musical comedy, games, and a stand-up routine. The headliner for this month's show, Saturday at the Full Moon Club at Zinnie's East, is Mary Jordan, the 2007 winner of the Funniest Person in Memphis contest, who just completed Second City's writing program in Chicago.

As for Mostly Comedy's approach ... "I feel dirty saying this," Fleming says, "but we try to be alternative." He cites Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Tompkins (who has appeared on the podcast) as examples of the smart but not overly intellectual material he likes. "If the audience knows what the punchline is going to be, then you're doing it wrong."

Fleming says that his childhood celebrity is part of his act. But, where it once was used at the beginning of his set "to get them on my side," it's now at the end. Explains Fleming, "I want to win them over with my actual material first."

Mostly Comedy, Full Moon Club at Zinnie's East, 8:30-11:30 p.m., $5
