Funny Man

Comedian Pauly Shore's comedy roots run deep. He was practically raised in the Comedy Store, his mom's comedy club on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, where many comedy greats — including Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams — frequently performed.

"It was like Boogie Nights," Shore says. "I think the fact that I haven't been [to] rehab and that I still have my brain in my head is a testament to myself and the choices I've made since."

Shore has been in and out of the public eye throughout the past couple decades, first "wiezing" his way into our lives in the late '80s as a quirky, wild MTV VJ, hosting Totally Pauly and a slew of spring-break parties. He made a handful of popular (and a couple not-so-popular) movies in the '90s. He was then out of the scene until the release of his 2003 star-studded movie Pauly Shore Is Dead, a "mockumentary" in which Shore fakes his own death.

Despite ups and downs in his career, Shore says giving up was never an option: "Comedy is one of those things. You don't choose it, it chooses you, and I think the true artists are the ones who do it no matter what."

Between appearing on various TV shows and shooting his newest mockumentary, Adopted, in which he goes to South Africa to adopt a child, Shore has had a lot going on recently. He's also currently on tour performing stand-up, and he's making a stop in Memphis.

"[In my act], I talk about my career, my movies, and everything that's going on in the world," he says. "It's all about relating to the people, and after that, you can take them on a ride."

Pauly Shore at Comedy, TN, Friday-Saturday, December 12th-13th. Two shows each night at 8:15 and 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the Comedy, TN box office or online at
