Re: “An Ostrander mistake? We know who staged "Crazy for You" but who is the choreographer?

Kell (hugs, dear), and Chris...

Aren't the reasons for the college cat mostly centered on a venue of excellence? I am terribly ignorant about the history of the theatre awards, but it seems to my naive mind that the reasons for the different venues have more to do with being inclusive in recognizing excellence. And that Chris, in my opinion, is a good thing -- a very, very good thing!

The more the merrier -- huzzah!

Re: “An Ostrander mistake? We know who staged "Crazy for You" but who is the choreographer?

Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions, and I'm not looking to be controversial. But I don't see the logic in excluding people from noms just because they're not students or faculty members -- they did the show...the show was open to others outside the college...they should share in the recognition if it comes.

I guess I lean away from caring what specific category or box people have to be in for award noms. My opinion anyway...whatev....

Tony...

That's such a load of BS! You can too dance! Kell, Melissa and I used to watch you dance with Christina every night from the wings in Buffalo Gal -- enchanting stuff, dude. Made me very envious. And Kell and Melissa swoon (sorry ladies -- I just outed you)!

mayfield...

Wow...'robbed' is pretty harsh. The community actors I know who participated in college productions are kind, generous people who would never rob anyone -- and certainly not college students who were working to perfect their craft. Aren't the community actors there because the college directors opened the production to others outside the college?

Speaking for myself as a community actor -- I may have more life experiences than most of the college actors (I am getting up there in age), but damn can those guys act circles around me! I watch the talent on these college stages and I'm blown away. Yeah...I'd be honored to do a college production -- those youngsters could teach me a lot.

Re: “An Ostrander mistake? We know who staged "Crazy for You" but who is the choreographer?

Chris...

Wonder why blocking can't be copyrighted since that's stage movement -- obviously different from choreography, but at a root level the same? Guess it has to do with the fact that walking is not considered an art form, but dance is.

Are you arguing that there should be a separate cat -- original choreography? If so, would the choreographers have to copyright their work and make their books available...so judges could make sure that they didn't adapt any moves from someone else? Btw, I would love to see a choreography book -- I can't dance to save my life, but would really like to see the written art of dance...this topic is fascinating to me.

Hey Terry...

Thanks -- I think I understand this a bit better now. Rocking reading Sat night, btw -- "Tom" was totally loco!

Re: “An Ostrander mistake? We know who staged "Crazy for You" but who is the choreographer?

Hey Marques...

First, congrats on your nom -- you and Tony completely kicked-ass in that show...woot!

As I see it, since K12 and college actors, directors, designers, etc... are eligible to be nominated in the community cat, seems fair that community actors, directors, designers, etc... would be eligible for the college cat. I see them as two different venues.

As for the choreography issue, I really don't see the controversy. Obviously, Kathy choreographed the show and did an amazing job. Chris, it sounds like the issue is with Theatre Memphis' playbill and the lack of mention of Susan Stromen's original choreography. But what does this have to do with a theatre award nomination? Do we
have different award categories for directors who use (and then adapt) original stage
direction? Do we have different award categories for costume designers who fully build their costumes versus those who assemble costumes already made?
