Calling all Wrockers, role-players, and far-wandering hobbits with 12-sided dice: The first-ever Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention arrives at the Cook Convention Center on Friday, November 5th.

"I've been a volunteer at the Midsouth Con for seven years," says Comic and Fantasy Convention mastermind Joe Thordarson. "Every year when it was over, I'd think the same thing: I hate that I have to wait a whole year to go to another convention here." So, to sate his desires for more con, Thordarson laid the groundwork for a new event that, while catering to sci-fi fans who attend the MidSouth Con, would focus more on comic books and fantasy.

"I started looking around to determine what made a great con. I made a wish list, and then things started to snowball," Thordarson says, explaining how his event grew very large very quickly. The schedule of events includes Steampunk workshops; art demonstrations; films, including Mark Hamill's Comic Book: The Movie; special guests such as Star Trek: The Next Generation regular Denise Crosby; gaming; and a VIP party. Harry Potter fans may want to take in the Wizard Rock (Wrock) concert, showcasing bands like the Whomping Willows and the Moaning Myrtles, a cabaret act who writes songs from the perspective of the geeky misfit ghost who floats about the bathrooms of Hogwarts complaining about how horribly she's treated. Sample lyric: "My life was full of misery and you're still mean to me/Though I've taken my last breath, now you're ruining my death."

"The [Harry Potter] bands were a treat to myself," Thordarson says. "I'm a huge fan of the books."

Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention, Friday-Saturday, November 5th-6th, at the Cook Convention Center. General admission is $15 per day, $25 for the weekend. Children under 6 get in free (www.memphiscfc.com).
