Get on the Bus

C-SPAN's mobile classroom stops in Memphis.

Call it gravel-to-gravel coverage.

Cable news network C-SPAN, known for its gavel-to-gavel coverage of government proceedings, brought its mobile TV studio to the National Civil Rights Museum last Friday.

Known as the C-SPAN school bus, the fully equipped newsroom was in town to teach people about the nonprofit network. The 45-foot-long bus was available for tours while parked outside the museum. Later in the day, the bus went to Whitehaven High School, where it was open to social-studies students and teachers.

"We travel in this bus to allow people to learn about C-SPAN. We're on the road 11 months out of the year, and we travel to all 50 states," said Cristino Griego, marketing manager for C-SPAN.

Inside the bus is a functional television control room."All you need is an uplink tape, and we could go live," Griego said.

The bus stopped in Memphis because several teachers at Whitehaven are educational partners with C-SPAN, and Griego said they have an ongoing relationship with the Civil Rights Museum.

"Civil rights is a hot topic," Griego said. "Being parked here allows community members to visit both the bus and the museum."
