Girl Talk and Mad Happy & Total Savage

When: Fri., Oct. 2, 8 p.m. 2009
Arguably the most prominent current practitioner of the mash-up arts, Pittsburgh DJ Gregg “Girl Talk” Gillis doesn’t turn anonymous found sounds into brand-new music à la DJ Shadow, nor does he set two familiar pop songs side by side à la Freelance Hellraiser and other mid-aughts “bootleg” purveyors. Pop familiarity is Gillis’ friend, but he typically layers samples from 25 or so songs — hardcore rap, cock rock, chart pop, and ’60s chestnuts among his favorite sources — across a four-minute track. And while I wish Gillis’ taste in hip-hop more often reached beyond the declamatory and pornographic snippets that too easily thrill his white collegiate fanbase, he mines his juxtapositions for plentiful comedy. And sometimes even more than that. These densely layered creations reward study but are equally effective as prurient party music. Girl Talk’s musically unstoppable 2008 album Feed the Animals is a blast. And judging from the YouTube evidence, his live shows are similarly chaotic. Girl Talk plays Minglewood Hall Friday, October 2nd, with Mad Happy and Total Savage. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. — Chris Herrington
