Hot Fun

Just as temperatures are creeping up, A.J. Northrop promises that the Junebugs and Juleps party at the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum will be one of the coolest things going.

Northrop is a member of the Memphis chapter of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, a non-profit that oversees the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum in Victorian Village. The party is one of a series the group has held to get folks to visit the house. One of the more popular parties had a speakeasy theme, which prompted Northrop to think, "Let's go with a liquor angle again." And so there will be mint juleps, but no ordinary mint juleps. These will be frozen — what Northrop describes as a sno-cone-y, slushee-like drink. "I wanted to bring a twist to it," he says.

The juleps are just one aspect of this very Southern affair. The food will be Southern-inspired, and much of the artwork — by Monty Shane, Amanda Hill, Andrea Cowart, and others — will be as well. (The works will be for sale.) The Brennan Villines Trio will provide the tunes until 11 p.m. Students from the interior design program at the University of Memphis will show their thesis projects in the Carriage House. In addition, the gardens at the house will be enclosed in a tent for the first time ever, and guests can explore the first floor of the museum and check out the "Southern Summers" exhibit, which details how those long ago kept cool without AC. "It's fascinating," Northrop says.

According to Northrop, things have never been better for the Woodruff-Fontaine. Traffic's up, and they're out of the red. As for Junebugs and Juleps, he says, it's going to be one party to remember. "For two months, I've been putting this on paper, and then it exploded. It's going to be beautiful."

"Junebugs and Juleps" at the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum, Saturday, June 11th, 7-11 p.m. $25. VIV tables for "Very Important Victorians" can be reserved for $200. For more information, call 526-1469.
