Last Monday night, WREG-TV Channel 3 led their news by asking,"Why are county officials spending your money to rub elbows with the Hollywood crowd?" It seems that Linn Sitler, head of the Memphis Film and Tape Commission; Rey Fleming, head of the Music Commission; Kevin Kane, head of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Shelby County mayor A C Wharton (flying on his own dime) went to Sundance where the sale of Craig Brewer's Memphis-shot film (with its bumping hip-hop soundtrack) shattered Sundance records. Since the success will bring attention and more film business to Memphis, it seems like the only scandal here is WREG's attempt to manufacture a scandal. -- Chris Davis
