Re: “Commercial Appeal Editor To Staff: "Work From a Coffee Shop."

Surprised and pleased to see your comments regarding husband, Dale Enoch, and The Commercial Appeal. I'm glad someone else remember those days.

Re: “Commercial Appeal Editor To Staff: "Work From a Coffee Shop."

These days, whenever I read something about the Commercial Appeal, I feel pain in my gut and want to cry. In the early 60s, my husband was hired by the CA as a sports reporter in Jackson, TN. Following graduation from college, he moved to Memphis to became a reporter covering politics and government. After several years, he became CA Bureau Chief of the Little Rock Office and covered general news, politics and government in the tri state area, which included the Arkansas Legislature.

We moved to Little Rock the day after we got married in '66. In those days, newsmen and news women took great pride in what they wrote and worked hard to produce accurate, well-written pieces which were proofe by very demanding editors in Memphis. The CA furnished a hard back book of rules for writing which the news force had to follow to the letter. Excellence was the object and it was not unusual for an editor to fling a story back on a reporter's desk for a re-write.

All of use connected in any way to the CA were extremely proud of the work done there and knew people could trust their news. When Gannett purchased the paper, we knew things would change for the worst as excellent journalism was no longer important to that company. Very sad.
