John Németh & the Bo-Keys at DKDC on Saturday

After Sharon Jones and Valerie June play Saturday night at Minglewood Hall, you may be tempted to turn the ol' jalopy toward home. That would be a terrible mistake. Here's why: You would miss John Németh playing songs from his soon-to-be-released record Memphis Grease at Bar DKDC.

Németh passed through town before when he was nominated for five (count 'em: five) Blues Music Awards. He was also nominated by Living Blues magazine for Most Outstanding Blues Singer in 2013. But Németh's real coup was securing backup from Memphis' Bo-Keys, torchbearers of essential Memphis sounds. Németh is amazed by his good fortune.

"I was actually surprised when they said they wanted to go out and tour with me," Németh said. "Most of them hang out around town and make records. So it's a huge honor for me, the whole thing: making the record."

Drummer Howard Grimes has been a lifelong source of fascination for Németh.

"I've been a fan of Howard Grimes before I even knew who he was," Németh said. "There's just a handful of drummers on the planet who are unique in their feel. Very few people have an honest-to-goodness different feel. When he plays a groove, it sounds like you're hearing it for the first time."

Németh and the band see Saturday as a warm up for an upcoming tour. They will play a relaxed, late-night set for people who are still jacked up on adrenaline after the ladies tear up Minglewood. What a big night for Memphis music. Get out there and be somebody. John Németh can show you how. Memphis Grease comes out March 25th. Look out.

"It's a hoot rehearsing with these guys," he said. "It's a funky band, man." Joe Boone
