Re: “Letter from the Editor

I get real tired of reading how the planes fly themselves nowadays. This is just so much garbage. Airplanes have had auto pilots and auto land for 40 years. The problem now is that the airlines training departments, driven by the good ole FAA and the legal departments pushed the pilots into using the automation all the time, and that caused the stick and rudder skills to go out the window. It has now come back to bite the industry. Also, the FAA in it's infinite wisdom has dumbed down the requirements to get a license over the years to depend on parachutes and computers to get a pilot out of trouble by not requiring any introduction to spin training. I could go on and on, but the gist of it is, pilots are the ones strapped to the pointed end of the plane and they all want to get home safely every night.
The salary fight has been going on for years and will not stop. The American public doesn't give a damn about safety if it costs to much. Period. The same is true about the FAA. Period.
As for the test getting more rigorous, not true. More hours are required, but that's it. More money required to get the hours, but just hours, not more training.
