Re: “On the Phone with Bill Cunningham of the Box Tops

I met Bill during his sojourn in Germany in the early '70's. I was into the American music being played in Germany at the time, which was really fluff. I'd never heard of the Box Tops. It wasn't 'till I moved to Canada and being a little older that I realized who he was. Wow. I still feel somewhat foolish, 50 years later. He didn't make any impression on me musically when I knew him, I'd never heard him play, and let's face it, what did I know? Apparently not much The only time I figured "okay, he can play the guitar" is when he patiently taught my little brother some easy to learn songs on his guitar. Bill wasn't a person to brag, nor was he ever anything but a nice guy. Polite, caring and a real gentleman. He ended up marrying my best friend. (It really should have been me. Ahhh, the missed opportunities.) I would have married him in a flash, just because he was such a great guy.
