King Day

"This is the unusual thing about nonviolence — nobody is defeated, everybody shares in the victory." — Martin Luther King Jr.

There are a lot of literally rewarding ways to do something good for your community and celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this holiday weekend. The National Civil Rights Museum and LifeBlood have partnered, and anybody who donates blood in honor of King at a LifeBlood Center from January 21st to 28th will receive free admission to the National Civil Rights Museum. The admission is good for the donor and up to three family members. The LifeBlood Mobile Center will also be at the museum throughout the King Day festivities on January 21st.

If blood is a little more than you're prepared to give, the museum is partnering with the Mid-South Food Bank to collect nonperishable food items on January 21st as well. Visitors who donate a can of food will receive an additional dollar off the museum's already discounted holiday admission.

If you'd like to sing "Happy Birthday" to Dr. King, MIFA is throwing a special service-oriented birthday party. The free event features guest speaker Reverend Dorothy Wells of Church of the Holy Apostles. Cake will be carved, and MIFA volunteers will deliver meals to about 800 homebound seniors.

The National Civil Rights Museum's King Day celebration is Monday, January 21st, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Museum admission is $3, or $2 with the donation of canned food. MIFA's Birthday Party for Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at MIFA headquarters, 910 Vance, Monday, January 21st, at 10 a.m.
