Le Loup, Wye Oak, Jana Hunter

When: Mon., March 15, 10 p.m. 2010
The march to Austin for the South By Southwest Music Festival always deposits lots of up-and-coming indie-rock acts in Memphis, and so it is this year as well. One such show is an interesting combo featuring Maryland duo Wye Oak and Washington, D.C., sextet Le Loup. Plying their trade for venerable North Carolina-based indie Merge, Wye Oak (pictured) is a straightforward indie-rock band whose familiar blend of sweetness and clamor and gender roles marks them as something of an inverse Yo La Tengo. Primary vocalist Jenn Wasner’s guitar has a little less noise and a little more Neil Young when it takes prominence but spends most of the time as a low-key factor. Drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack fills out the sound. Their tourmates Le Loup are a more of-the-moment band with a sound rooted in experimental pop and avant folk. Wye Oak and Le Loup play the Hi-Tone Café Monday, March 15th, with Jana Hunter. Showtime is 10 p.m. Admission is $8. — Chris Herrington
