Letters to the Editor

Uptown World

Mary Cashiola's story on Uptown ("Living in an Uptown World," December 13th issue) was a revealing portrait of what a well-planned cooperative effort between public and private interests can create.

Reading about projects such as this one gives me hope for my city. Revitalizing the city's urban core into family-friendly neighborhoods (such as those in Midtown, Evergreen, and Cooper-Young) provides an attractive alternative to the endless commute and mall-centered lifestyles being promoted by self-serving developers out east.

As gas prices rise and sub-prime mortgages take their toll on the 'burbs, those who were smart enough to invest in life "on the river" downtown will look like geniuses.

Thanks to the Flyer for Chris Herrington's very kind write-up on our 21st annual "Holidaze Celebration" (December 13th issue). It was much appreciated, I assure you.

FreeWorld is currently in the process of recording our fifth full-length CD at Zebra Ranch Studio with the legendary Jim Dickinson producing. Of course, when it's ready to be released (most likely sometime in the spring) I'll make sure that you all get a couple of copies for your listening enjoyment and review purposes. I hope you have a happy holiday season!

More lady of Liberation

I am not a member of the World Overcomers church that displays the "Lady of Liberation" statue, nor am I speaking in support of it. But whether one views the statue with displeasure or even hate, it cannot be legally destroyed. It is not breaking any law of this country.

If burning "Old Glory" is permitted, then the revised version of the Statue of Liberty should be permitted to exist under the same constitutional right of free speech. Steve Aldred writes (Letters, December 13th issue) that it is liberty that is represented by the Statue of Liberty, not religion, but he is willing to deny liberty to others.

The Constitution guarantees certain liberties or freedoms to all citizens of this country, among which is the freedom of expression. Our country protects religious rights. Aldred's letter reflects a mindset that has given this country a history of oppression and the denial of the liberties of those who are different. We must prove that the laws of this land are not just for a privileged few and are extended to every citizen.

Whatever the "Lady of Liberation" represents for those who agree with it cannot be denied. Besides, the last word in the name of the statue is "liberation." It would do us all good, when we speak of personal liberty, to make sure we are not trying to deny others of their right to the same thing. Besides, if your liberty is contingent upon what is in another person's yard, are you truly free?

Othniel Marquei

This is a response to Steve Aldred, writer of "The Lady of Liberation" letter: Dear Steve, Feel better? Good. Now get over it.

Maybe if there was more religion in Memphis it wouldn't be the crime-infested hellhole that it is.

Republicans and God

The Church of the Mighty Dollar and the Republican Party of the wealthy have joined forces in Iowa to promote the politics of religion and division. The campaigning there reminds me more of a Bible revival than a presidential primary.

The GOP's number-one wedge issue for the coming 2008 election campaign is immigration. Forget about the war, the huge and growing national debt, the mortgage meltdown, and the health-care crisis. Former Republican presidential contender Tom Tancredo gave us a taste of upcoming dirty tricks with a recent campaign ad that depicted an immigrant crossing the border in order to blow up a shopping mall. Since when did hard-working Hispanics become terrorists?

Polling leader Mike Huckabee stands for the hypocisy that has become the Republican Party: pro-life on one hand and pro-war and pro-gun on the other.
