Letters to the editor

Unsung hero

Thanks for Andria Lisle's article, "A Week of Goodbyes" (November 17th

issue), which gave praise to Tommy Dills, not only as a talented, creative

sound engineer but also for being an unsung hero in the music industry. Tommy would get a big laugh at that, but he certainly was a hero in my eyes.

He once traveled the world as Roy Orbison's sound engineer, and I asked

him what his favorite city was. He said San Francisco but added that he always wanted to visit Yellowstone National Park.

Last summer, Tommy, Sam Tibbs, and I shared his last Beale Street Caravan road trip, cramming all the gear, suitcases, and each other into a van for 66 fun-filled hours to Portland, Oregon's annual blues festival. We had planned to detour north on our way back so Tommy could see Yellowstone Park, but Tommy was worried that it would cost too much. Sam convinced him otherwise.

When we got there, we learned that it would cost $20 to drive through the park before closing time and that we probably wouldn't see much. I thought we were sunk, but Sam wouldn't listen to Tommy's protests, mostly about how many groceries we could buy for $20.

Sam drove through the park at warp-speed so we weren't locked in for the night. As he rounded the last curve in the road, we all saw it -- Old Faithful. By a fluke, we came upon the geyser in all its glory, and we saw what Tommy came to see. He was a man fulfilled.

I think we should all be fulfilled to have known the man that Tommy Dills was. He loved his friends, his music, his fun -- and he loved me and the Beatles too!

Best of Memphis?

I'm fairly new to Memphis and I get excited when I come home and pick up a copy of the Flyer in the airport, especially when it's the Best of Memphis issue (November 10th). Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

It saddens me when I read that one of our top three places to shop for women's clothes is Victoria's Secret. And I was disappointed to see so many chains named as winners. I wanted to read about places that are unique to Memphis. Those are the places I am trying to discover. Those are the kind of places that visitors who come to our great city are trying to discover too. You can go to Starbucks and Payless Shoes anywhere in the country.

This letter is actually a thank you to Mary Cashiola. I felt like she wrote the "Shopping A-list" just for me. I will be checking out the National Ornamental Museum, Celery, and Zoe. I hope the Flyer will continue featuring hidden gems like these -- and I promise to patronize these places and vote for them next year, so maybe we can have a "best of" list that truly reflects Memphis.

There is no other single individual in the history of our nation who has caused the world more death and destruction than Vice President Dick Cheney. His lies about weapons of mass destruction and Saddam's nuclear weapons development got us into an illegal, costly, and totally unnecessary war. His secret energy meetings with the oil companies were a crime against the earth and all humanity. He gave away the store with tax breaks and incentives to the powerful oil and coal industries and cut off funding to the renewable energy industries which the planet so desperately needs.

The deadly war in Iraq goes on with no end in sight, and global warming with all its calamitous consequences is starting to bring us more hurricanes and super-storms. When we should be scrambling to put a conservation program in place, Cheney tells us that "conservation is not the answer." When we should be putting all our money into building renewable energy technology, Cheney does everything he can to dump more money on the fossil fuel industry of which he is so much a part.
