Classic Tim

I am not sure if Tim Sampson ever ranted better (The Rant, April 26th issue). The last sentence was classic!

Politics, etc.

I have known Kevin Gallagher and David Upton for a long time, and while I hate to jump into the middle of the issues that are between the two of them (Politics, April 26th issue), I can no longer watch without commenting.

I was one of many who encouraged Kevin to run for the Senate seat, and I was also one of the people who gave him advice when he decided to withdraw from the race. One thing that was very clear was that it was absolutely in Kevin's best interest for Beverly Marrero to win the Senate seat so that Kevin could replace her in the house. So, why would he withdraw from the race and not do anything to help her win? The truth is, he did absolutely everything that he was asked to do and more.

I was a witness to several phone calls between Kevin and Marrero's campaign. Kevin provided walk sheets, helped to target voters, and recruited people to help pass out literature. He showed up at events and was on call to do whatever Marrero's campaign asked him to do. If Marrero or Upton were unhappy with Kevin's level of involvement with the campaign, all they had to do was ask him to get more involved.

Kevin Gallagher is a loyal friend, a hard worker, and he is not the kind of person who would back out on a promise to someone. I wish I could say the same about everyone involved in this race.

What do MLGW and Motel 6 have in common? They both leave the light on for you.

On April 27th at 9:30 p.m., I took a picture of the MLGW building. Most of the lights were still on! It's the same almost every night. There does not appear to be anyone working in these offices, so why not save the city a lot of money by turning out the lights at night? How many offices are left empty with the lights on? How much money is being wasted?

MLGW urges us to conserve energy by turning off our lights when we leave the room and to turn our thermostats to 72 in the summer and 68 in the winter. Looks like MLGW needs to take their own advice and practice what they preach.

A Special Place

I sent the following to the White House and to Congressman Steve Cohen: There must be or should be a special place in hell for anyone who daily keeps killing young Americans in Iraq just to save face.

Restore Assault-Weapons Ban

On April 16th, the worst mass shooting in U.S. history occurred on the campus of Virginia Tech University. A lone gunman killed over 30 people and wounded 27.

The two guns he used were a .22-caliber pistol and a 9-mm pistol with a 19-rounds-per-clip capacity, larger than the 10-rounds-per-clip limit imposed by the 1994 assault-weapons ban. What if next time the gunman has a powerful assault rifle such as an AK-47, a good vantage point, and a large crowd of people to shoot at? The carnage of April 16th would pale in comparison.

If someone is determined to kill others and then himself, we probably can't stop him. But we can limit by law the destructive capacity of the weapon he uses.

The NRA says guns don't kill people; people kill people. But would the Virginia Tech killer have been able to kill as many people in as short a time as he did with an assault weapon?

Why is it anti-gunners always resort to outright lying (The Fly-by, April 26th issue)? The article stated that in Tennessee you don't have to have a license to buy a gun, that there are no background checks, and, when buying a firearm at a gun show, there is no waiting period. Not true.

I have legally purchased five guns in Memphis. Each time, I had to produce my driver's license and fill out a form that was submitted for a background check. And each time, I had to wait two weeks to pick up my new firearm.

The day I see a gun load itself and rob a Mapco is the day I will become an anti-gunner. Until then, the Flyer should at least "try" to tell the truth. Rik Anderson

Editor's note: Kevin Gallagher was misidentified as "Mike" Gallagher in last week's Flyer.
