Is Herenton a Tyrant?

One of the dictionary definitions of a tyrant is "any person in a position of authority who exercises power oppressively or despotically."

One of the definitions of a racist is "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement."

As a concerned Memphian, I would like Flyer readers to consider whether these definitions describe Mayor Herenton. It's scary, isn't it? The politics of racial hatred are back, but nobody is calling Herenton on it because of his shield of political correctness. We must not be afraid to reveal the truth.

I absolutely loved Ron Hart's article "Here's the Deal" (Viewpoint, June 28th issue). I have never been to Bonnaroo, but I know a lot of people who go every year.

I am 35 years old, so I am not quite Geritol-bound, but I'm getting closer every day. I cannot imagine how much fun the people-watching was at Bonnaroo, particularly the folks in those tiny bathing suits.

At any rate, thanks for the great article. Maybe next year I will brave the traffic and go to Bonnaroo myself!

Time to Impeach?

I was going to write about the prescription health plan that the Bush administration instituted and how underfunded it is. Drugs that were normally covered are now slowly disappearing from the covered list, and the folks on the plan now have to dig into their own pockets to get the drugs they desperately need.

But I'm not going to write about that issue. Instead, I want to compliment Bruce VanWyngarden on his editor's note in the June 28th issue. It was wonderful, and the last line about the blow job was monumental. Maybe all of the concerned citizens of Memphis could hire the woman who is involved in the Herenton brouhaha to take a red-eye to Washington and do the dirty deed for America. I'll chip in.

President Bush used his powers to keep convicted aide Scooter Libby out of jail. While this is the president's right, I wonder why he thinks the 30 months given by a judge is excessive.

He has allowed two brave border-patrol agents to sit in prison serving 10-year sentences for wounding a known Mexican drug-runner. It seems that Bush has no sense of justice. Of course, that could be expected since lying is just another tool this president uses to further his agenda.

Now Fred Thompson, who once lobbied the White House for an African dictator who murdered thousands, says he agrees with the president's pardon of Libby. Rudy Giuliani, whose former police commissioner and business partner, Bernie Kerik, plea-bargained to escape jail, also thinks it was the right thing to do.

These are the kind of people the Republican Party is running for president. You would think they would want to do better.

Is anyone surprised that George W. Bush has again shown his disregard for our rule of law by letting his crony Scooter Libby dodge his prison sentence?

Bush lied to Congress to get them to buy into his invasion of Iraq. He then started a war that was not in self-defense, a violation of the U.N. Charter that the U.S. pledged to honor. He illegally wire-tapped Americans, lied about it, and then continued to do it. He allowed torture by excluding those he considers to be enemies from the protections of the Geneva Conventions. Then, of course, he lied about it. And his many "signing statements" allow him to evade those very laws.

Bush has always seen himself as being above the law. There is growing agreement that the Bush/Cheney administration has gone appallingly beyond the misdeeds of any past administration. I shudder to think of the precedent this will set for future administrations if Bush and Cheney are not held legally accountable for their actions.

Piecemeal efforts to stop Bush's and Cheney's crimes have fallen short. The abuse of our country will continue unless Bush and Cheney are removed from office.
