Re: “Spirited Debate

The wine in grocery stores needs to be addressed at the state level. Locally we need to allow beer sales before noon on Sunday. Blue laws, ones that are particularly religious in nature have no business in modern politics. There's no reason Sunday liquor or beer sales should be different than any other day. I was doing my grocery shopping at Kroger at 10:30 am this past Sunday. I would have liked to pick up a couple of six packs for the coming week, but alas no beer before noon caused me to have to make an extra trip for the store. I have no desire to practice religous observances Sunday morning and if I want a beer from a local grocer I don't need "The Man" reminding me I should be in Sunday School.

Re: “Tow the Line

Two years ago my car was towed from the Arbors Apartments because the tags had expired over the weekend. The Arbors said it was towed at the discretion of PB&J. PB&J said it was following the policy of the apartment complex. There was no phone call between the two, no signed authorization. PB&J just trolls the lot for violators and tows without warning the cars in violation of the apartment building rules, which aren't posted anywhere except the lease agreement. My only recourse was small claims court, general sessions court, but the fee to file is $200 and I had just paid a tow fee and my vehicle registration fee.

The attendants at PB&J were extremely rude and threatening, claiming that if I didn't come up with the fee by 5pm they were going to charge me for another day of storage. I asked to see the contract that allowed them to tow my car. They refused. I asked if they knew what caused the big sink hole in their parking lot on South Main. They said they didn't. I said, "Karma."

Re: “Haslam Says He'd Do Away With Gun Permits

Bruce's premise that "well-regulated" means government regulation shows his lack of military knowledge. To regulate a militia means to train them.

I doubt highly that Haslam gives a rats ass about individual rights. He's simply pandering to the pro-gun lobby. His rhetoric is dead on, but lacks conviction and principle. Gun ownership is an individual right, just as the right to self-defense. I don't need a permit to take a martial arts course, the mastery of which could lead to the ability to use deadly force. I shouldn't have to master martial arts to defend myself either.

Re: “Letter from the Editor

They want to return the country to the "good old days" of the Bush administration, where corporate stooges ran federal regulatory agencies and the banking industry and Wall Street were unrestrained from making their billion-dollar bets with our money and mortgages.

Both Geithner and Paulson, Obama and Bush, supported the Wall Street bailout. I fail to see a dimes worth of difference between Obushmas economic polices.

Re: “Free Golf at Overton Park?

Surely there are enough retired golfers in Memphis that would care enough to volunteer a morning to keep the courses open. To make all taxpayers responsible for something that's enjoyed by a relatively few amount of people seems unfair.

Re: “Backstreet Update

I wish government would spend so much time and effort targeting violent and property crime and leave consenting adults alone. The nanny state gives rise to the police state.

Re: “Backstreet Owner Arrested; Club Shut Down

Using the MPD for your own personal vendetta against Backstreet and the owner is despicable. Matt Smart's friends should ostracize lest they be next. Nobody likes a snitch.
