Like the Dickens

Over the last century, Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol has become as synonymous with the holidays as the baby Jesus. It just wouldn't be Christmas without some rendition of Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.

Enter Gerald Charles Dickens, great-great grandson of the famous novelist. Dickens will be stopping in Memphis to portray all 26 characters from the classic tale on Sunday, December 11th, at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens.

The younger Dickens will be evoking the memory of his forebear as he dresses much as the elder Dickens would -- frock coat, cravat, and an embroidered waistcoat.

In what can best be described as performance art, he'll be reading the parts of each character, using tone and inflection to change roles. While it may sound a bit like a study in dissociative disorders, the show has regularly received favorable reviews for 10 years. But if you need to see it to believe, do so now. This is Gerald Dickens' farewell tour.

Dickens at the Dixon, Sunday, December 11th, at 2 p.m. (performance only, $5-$25) and 5 p.m. (performance and reception, $15-$40), The Dixon Gallery and Gardens
