Re: “Animal Control Officer Arrested on Cruelty Charges

This is obviously horrible, and is another sad story of animal cruelty in Memphis. But the question needs to be asked, why were 2 pit bulls not in a secure enough yard that they were able to break free? This points to 2 chronic problems in our city--a substandard animal control system and pet owners who are scandalously remiss in their care of their animals. yes, we know this family loved their dogs, we've seen them on TV, but in general, too many animals, dogs and cats, run loose in Memphis--even pet owners who love their animals seem more clueless and irresponsible to me here in Memphis than in any other city I've lived in. Dogs are left outside to bark their brains out all night long, owners who do bother to walk their dogs don't scoop after them, and in general, Memphis needs to take a hard look at how it treats its animals and how it inflicts them on its neighbors. This is an opportunity to educate on all levels.
