"Why don't men call back?"

If you're Nancy Nichols, an authority on the contemporary dating scene — believe it, she's been there — that question is on the minds of single (and frustrated and straight) women nationwide. In fact, it's the number-one question women are asking Nichols, a native Memphian and transplanted Texan, as she travels the stores and airwaves promoting her book, Secrets of the Ultimate Husband Hunter. The answer to the above question, though, is no secret. It's simple:

"If you're certain you did nothing wrong," Nichols recently told the Flyer, "don't waste your time worrying about it. Maybe the timing wasn't right. The chemistry wasn't there. Or maybe he already has a girlfriend." In short (and to quote the phrase), maybe he's just not into you.

But back to that question ... It's one that Nichols expects to hear and it's an answer Nichols is likely to give if you're at What's Hot, the women's boutique in the Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown, this Tuesday night. The in-store event is a wine-and-cheese seminar hosted by Nichols. The title of the get-together: "Sprucing Up Your Curb Appeal: The 7 Elements of a Woman's Style."

On to the next question? No question. It's a complaint: "There are no good men out there."

Nichols hears it all the time. And here's the answer she gives all the time, in a nutshell:

"There are good men out there. But to attract them you need to be approachable, upbeat, and nonjudgmental," Nichols said. "Be open-minded. Date a wider range of men. Temper your emotions with logic. Trust your gut instincts." And trust Nichols to know.

"Sprucing Up Your Curb Appeal," with Nancy Nichols, at What's Hot, 7685 Farmington, on Tuesday, February 17th, 6 to 9 p.m.

$20 if you preregister at; $25 at the door (price includes a copy of "Secrets of the Ultimate Husband Hunter").
