Re: “An Ostrander mistake? We know who staged "Crazy for You" but who is the choreographer?

I just got around to checking back in on this discussion. A lot of great points that have got me re-thinking my original position on that first post. I made a pretty broad and basic statement, and I completely see how the line is hazy on the topic, but especially unclear is what could be done and where... What I mean is, I have not convinced myself that there has been any wrong-doing on the subject of college nominations at all, though I am absolutely certain that none can be blamed on the performers and artists who were nominated, nor on those judges who nominated them. All of these folks were doing there very difficult jobs, and doing them well. (performers perform. artists create, and judges judge) If anything, the definitions need to be clear in the policies of the Ostrander rulebook (if there is such a thing) or, and much more importantly, in the policies of the colleges who are doing the casting and the hiring. I completely see the point that directors and designers need to come form outside the schools own circle, sometimes. But, it is also just a little weird, sometimes, as a community member to see that all the principal roles in some college productions go to those who are not really affiliated with the college in any way.

IN ANY CASE, the truest thing I said in that first post is... I should keep my mouth shut. I am, quite literally, speaking out of school here, and I know that there are many more, better informed, people than I out there busting their butts to make these awards happen at all. Much thanks to them!

Interesting. While we are in the topic of inappropriate category nominations (and I should really just learn to keep my mouth shut, I'm sure) I am surprised that there isn't more talk about the college nominations being so full on non-college participants. I have absolutely no doubt that the work and talent showcased by all those nominated are deserving, but if we are going to separate the noms and awards into the two classic categories, then I believe the college noms should go to students and/or university faculty. Maybe I'm mistaken, but there seems to be an unusual amount of alumni and/or community members appearing in the college nominations this year.
