Re: “Cohen Back on Track Quote-Wise: Politico Features him on SOTU

How about sources, methodology for "set unofficial records during his first two terms as someone considered quoteworthy in the political press"? Just because you call it unofficial doesn't mean a journalist should just make things up. He didn't really slow down when he called Republicans Nazis, did he?

Re: “On the First Mayoral Forum: Part Two

No presumption here, simply one voice in the wilderness.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like better reporting to let the public know you tried to get a comment (even if you didn't get one) rather than just making it seem like you were just observing with no actual interaction with the players. Also, thanks for letting us know that you will actually be following up rather than some amorphous, "Turner is almost certainly going to be sounded out in days to come [by somebody]".

Re: “On the First Mayoral Forum: Part Two

Since this was posted on Thursday and the debate was Monday, it would seem that Jackson could have taken the time to "sound out" SCDP Chairman Turner himself rather than posting speculation. Sometimes its hard to tell whether Jackson is actually reporting on something that happened or acting as a happenstance bystander with no responsibility for providing actual facts. You can tell Jackson loves the drama of politics, but sometimes it seems he likes to play his own role by adding to the drama with insufficient reporting.

Re: “"O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree!" Cohen Has a Ball at White House

Seeing as the Flyer usually gets its news about Cohen from Cohen himself, I'm guessing the story is really somewhere in the middle. This also takes into consideration that 'rude' to Cohen probably means you aren't going along with him exactly as he dictates.

Re: “Field Grows: What Does Chumney Say About Council Race?

Let's all hope Chumney finds some public service outlet that's different than a reprise of her ill-fated mayoral campaigns.

Re: “Twenty-two Questions

Leftwingcracker, so John Branston is above question because you and the editor of The Flyer say so? How is his judgment not open to question of any kind? This, again, displays an insensitivity that in itself is questionable. We really are headed down the wrong road if the answer to someone taking offense at Branston's use of this term is you can't question John Branston or the Flyer because they're supposed to be liberal, and so couldn't possibly be victims of their own white privilege. As I said in another comment, just because Branston wrote "[n-word]" instead of saying "nigger", let's not fool ourselves that this doesn't get translated in our heads. Let me say again: I could say John Branston is an 'SOB', but most people would still interpret that as a 'son of a bitch', and that still would be an insult. LOL, WTF, WWJD; get the picture? To me, the question is not the use of the word, if it had been in an appropriate context, but let's trace Branston's thought process. Joe Clark-type = HNIC = next superintendent of MCS. So is the Clark-type a translation for head nigger? If that's the extent of the moral he got out of Lean On Me, he really should watch it again.

Re: “The "HNIC" Controversy

First, Darla, I don't think the "n-word" is a main theme of Lean On Me. I don't think it was the main punchline from the movie either. There were a lot of things about Joe Clark in that movie, so it's interesting that Branston would zoom in on the HNIC comment. Second, Bruce VW, I'm not saying that Branston is racist, but let's get real, the fact that he's an award-winning columnist is a terrible justification to prove otherwise. Branston is not particularly racist, just insensitive and lacking in judgment. If the goal was to focus on his "pointed and relevant questions", then maybe he shouldn't have started the column by implying the new superintendent would be a nigger. Removing everything else, that is what he started with, then went on to try to set the context for using that term. Maybe the term was novel to him, or he thought it originated in the movie. If that is what he thought, he would be wrong. You say you didn't "use the 'N-word'", but if you were honest with yourself, does 'n-word' not get translated to 'nigger' in your head? That's disingenuous. I could say John Branston is an 'SOB', but most people would still interpret that as a 'son of a bitch', and that still would be an insult. LOL, WTF, WWJD; get the picture? How did he consider that term to be "a cultural reference to a very real and important decision facing our school board"? Is he saying that the board needs to decide whether they should hire a head nigger in charge? You can couch it in Joe Clark's self-determination to call himself that, but at the point that you make that an important decision facing the school board, you are agreeing with the connotations associated with the term. If you don't understand the full connotations, then maybe you should ask somebody before blindly using a term based solely on your own cultural paradigm.
