Re: “Anti-Confederate Sentiment in Nashville

I don't know of an atheist who is genuinely offended by the display of Crucifixes in church. I know of a lot of Christians who are offended by such a blatant violation of the Second Commandment, however.

Your comparison is without merit. The Confederacy was begun, in part, to preserve the institution of black slavery. Black slavery was government sanctioned. Black discrimination and segregation were supported by former Confederate states.

You may see it as a symbol of other things entirely, and I understand that. I do too. I'm proud of where I come from. However, there's a significant portion of our population who have a different experience, and they see it according to that experience. In that context, the use of the flag by the state would seem... insensitive.

So because some will continue to complain, we shouldn't remove offense for the sake of those who would be genuinely appreciative? That makes little sense.

Re: “Anti-Confederate Sentiment in Nashville

I don't think anyone thinks it will cure those ills.

What it will help do is stop reminding our friends and neighbors that their ancestors were once chattel, couldn't vote, and were later forced to attend separate schools, eat food out of sight, drink from separate water fountains, and were generally denied the same rights that others enjoyed.

No, it won't end a lot of problems, but it will end that one. So... yeah.

Re: “Outliers and Insiders

Who is Chooch Pickard? I haven't heard of him before. Been wondering who would take over for Strickland and I've never heard his name come up in local politics before.

Re: “UPDATE: Bike Lanes, Turn Lanes Headed to Union Avenue

Memphis needs to move forward. The country is becoming more bike friendly. It's a draw for the city and can help cut down on car traffic.
