Mikal Cronin at Murphy’s

Gonerfest is still a few months away, but for a one-night, one-venue microcosm of that garage-rock festival you could head to Murphy's on Tuesday night for a four-band, mid-week bill headlined by California garage-pop savant Mikal Cronin. Cronin was an early bandmate of scene stalwart Ty Segall and a sometime member of Segall's road band. But on his own, Cronin's sound tends to be less fuzzy and more melodic, blending elements of surf rock, '60s pop, and '90s college-radio rock. Cronin's second solo album, MCII, was released on the venerable indie Merge last month. Joining Cronin are lo-fi Oakland roots-pop trio Shannon & Clams; Arizona punk band Destruction Unit, who are led by former Memphian and Reatards member Ryan Rousseau; and Olympia, Washington, punk band Milk Music, whose current album, Cruise Your Illusion, was released by Mississippi indie Fat Possum. Mikal Cronin and company play Murphy's on Tuesday, June 25th. Doors open at 8 p.m. The first band starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
