Re: “Sit! Stay!

I have never understood the people who leave early. I'm guessing they're the same folks who leave church before the final song to get to the buffet. If you're in that big of a hurry to get home and sit on your couch, stay home.

Re: “Media Day Dispatch: Slouching toward Vanderbilt

As an English teacher, I thank you for the Yeats allusion. As a Grizzlies fan, the column is just a heck of a lot of fun to read.

Re: “Not All In This Together

Shelby County is so behind the rest of the country. We want excellence, but do not want to provide a place for it on the high school level. The top schools on the Newsweek list are always all magnet (optional) or charter schools; the school within a school model just doesn't work. We have all kind of special programs and money for the lower performing students; why not provide for the academically advanced? White Station has a waiting list for the optional program of students who meet the criteria (including Shelby County students whose parents are willing to pay tuition to send them there), but due to MCS refusal to enforce the attendance zone for this school in the strict way they do other schools the standard program is busting at the seams. Therefore, a school that was build for 1,560 students is bursting with 2,300. With the long overdue demolition of the South Area Annex, the problem will only get worse. If we want to compete on a national level for academic excellence, the best thing the consolidated school system could do is send the standard program elsewhere and make White Station all optional.

We also need to close many, many underpopulated schools, but that's another issue for another time.

Thank you, Mr. Branston, for addressing issues that need to be brought to light.
